There are many factors you need to consider when making this decision.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you moving across the parking lot or across the country?&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you have time available for full days of packing, moving, and unpacking?&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does your budget allow for movers?&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you have friends and family on both sides of the move who would be willing to spend a day or more moving boxes and furniture?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to figure out the budget piece of this puzzle, you\u2019ll want to gather a few moving quotes. If you do decide to use a <a href=\"\/how-to-avoid-moving-scams\/\">moving company<\/a>, make sure that you read reviews and verify that it\u2019s a reputable business before making the deposit. Here are some basic packing materials you\u2019ll need:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moving Boxes \u2013 a variety of sizes<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Packing Paper \u2013 old newspaper or craft paper<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bubble Wrap<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/best-tape-for-packing-moving-boxes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tape<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 scotch tape to secure bubble wrap and packing tape for the boxes<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Markers \u2013 in different colors to designate specific rooms or fragile items<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can always go to Home Depot or other similar stores to buy boxes, but it\u2019s worth checking out some potentially <\/span><a href=\"\/best-places-to-find-moving-boxes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cheaper options<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well. Your local recycling center may have boxes available, and it doesn\u2019t hurt to ask at the supermarket. Stores like that go through thousands of boxes and are sometimes willing to give them away for free. Finally, the \u201cEverything is Free\u201d group in your community often has someone who has just moved and is looking for a place to donate used but functional boxes.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This handy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moving.com\/moving-boxes\/packing-calculator.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">packing calculator <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will help you determine how many boxes you\u2019ll need to pack up your home. Packing for a move is not one of them. Give yourself weeks of prep time. Work backwards from the move date and plan to work on pre-move tasks for a period of time every day. Assign specific days or time slots for different packing activities. This will ensure you\u2019re not frantically throwing shoes, spices, and golf balls into the same box hours before the moving truck arrives!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The big tasks will feel more manageable if you break them into smaller steps. For example, if the kitchen packing feels like too much, start with the serving dishes that you probably don\u2019t use every day. Then move to the tupperware (leaving out a few for those last few weeks).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The amount of time you give yourself will differ based on how big your current home is and how many items you have to move. For example, a small studio apartment or one-bedroom house may only take a few days, while a larger home can take a week or longer to <a href=\"\/how-to-pack-moving-boxes-efficiently\/\">pack up properly<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below is a <a href=\"https:\/\/moving.tips\/packing-tips\/how-long-does-it-take-to-pack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">breakdown<\/a> of how much time you should allot based on the size of your home:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studio or 1-bedroom apartment: 2 days<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two-bedroom home: 3-4 days<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three-bedroom house: 4-5 days<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four-bedroom home: 5-6 days<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a garage, attic or basement they also recommend adding an extra day for each space.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to having a packing plan, take time to consider how unpacking might look in the new place. \u201cIf you take photos of the rooms and furniture at the old home, it will give you an \u2018inventory\u2019 so you can easily set items back up correctly in the new one,\u201d Huffines said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Huffines also advises to leave yourself some time when going in between the two locations. \u201cIf possible, try to leave yourself a little buffer of time before you have to be out of your current place in order to tie up loose ends. That\u2019s why it\u2019s essential to store important documents in a designated folder or box. You may want to keep this box with you rather than have the movers take it along with your other items.
